Looking after your mouth is essential for the health of your mouth and teeth, but not only that. According to a study recently published in the medical and scientific journal Journal of Periodontology, men who suffer from gum disorders are twice as likely to have problems with impotence.

Several scientific studies, including one recently carried out by the University of Granada and published in the Journal of Clinical Periodontology involving more than 150 men of European origin, have highlighted the close connection between oral hygiene and sex life.

The data collected showed that 3 out of 4 people with erectile dysfunction also suffer from tooth and gum problems caused by inadequate oral hygiene (74%).

The scientists therefore concluded that erectile dysfunction and gum disease are caused by the same type of inflammation in the blood vessels.

This inflammation is due to the molecule CRP, which was found at high levels both in impotent men and in men with gum disease.

Research has also shown that treating oral disease, and so reducing gum inflammation, brings an immediate improvement in erectile function.

Taking care of your oral hygiene, by brushing your teeth at least twice a day with a toothbrush and dental floss and having at least two professional dental cleaning sessions a year to remove plaque and tartar, is therefore essential to prevent not only major diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular disease but also loss of libido.

As your mother used to say, remember to brush your teeth properly before going to bed!!
