Thumb Sucking or a Dummy: Which Is Better for Teeth?

2 min read

Baby with a dummy in its mouth

Sucking is a natural reflex in babies. Sucking a thumb, fingers, a dummy or other objects makes a child feel safer and happier and helps them explore the world around them. Young children also suck to comfort themselves or to fall asleep.

How can sucking affect the development of the teeth?

Sucking a thumb or a dummy can cause problems with the growth and alignment of the permanent teeth, as well as deformation of the palatal arch. A dummy causes the same problems as a thumb but, unlike thumb sucking, it is an easier habit to break.

The intensity with which a child sucks is a decisive factor in whether dental problems develop. Children who simply hold their thumb in their mouth are less likely to develop oral problems than those who suck it vigorously.

Up to what age can a child keep sucking?

Children normally stop sucking their thumb or dummy between the ages of two and four, or when the permanent teeth are about to come through. If you notice changes in your child’s baby teeth or are worried because they have been sucking for too long, see your dentist.

How can I help my child stop sucking?

  • Praise your child when they are not using the dummy or sucking their thumb.
  • Try to understand what makes them anxious and insecure, and help them get through those moments without turning to the dummy or thumb.
  • Involve your child in deciding how and when to stop sucking, for example by letting them throw the dummy in the bin in exchange for a reward.
  • Take them to the dentist so the dentist can explain why it is important to stop sucking and what can happen to their teeth if they don’t.

If these tips don’t work, try bandaging the thumb or putting a sock over their hand when they fall asleep, or ask your dentist to prescribe a bitter-tasting liquid to apply to the thumb. The important thing is not to lose patience and to keep going!
